Gold Paintings (1953–ca. 1960)

The Gold Paintings are part of the series sometimes referred to as Elemental Paintings and were begun in 1953 at Rauschenberg’s Fulton Street studio in New York. On a ground of newsprint, paper, and wood shapes, the artist applied gold leaf to create small works with highly tactile surfaces.
